Tips On Gluing Flat Back Gems

Gluing Foiled Gemstones made of Acrylic
You can try a many different glues to bond but you cannot use any containing isocyanate (the instant adhesives), or acetone because the strong solvents damage the backing of the stone. A clear drying adhesive is recommended.

To Skin (Make Body Jewels)
Recommended are: Acrylic Adhesive (Spirit Gum), Bindi or Eye Lash Glue. We came across an interesting article on this topic with a lot of helpful how to information. If you want to turn any of our jewels into body jewels then check this out. We think it's more than worth your time. The Sweet 7

To Paper and Cardboard
You can use white craft glue or a glue stick. We like glue stick because it sets up fast.
To use glue stick you need to apply a little glob of glue so you can press the stone down onto it. Judge the amount so there isn't excess coming out the sides.
Keep your glue stick warm and moist, and spin it into the point of placement. Or you can use a little tool to scoop the glue off the stick, and place it down.

To Fabric and Textile
There are several brands of glue that are specifically formulated for bonding rhinestones to fabric.
Some of the more common brand names are Beacon Gem-Tac, E6000, Victory 1991, and Aleene's Jewel-It. Other fabric glues also work.
In general, glues for fabrics should retain some flexibility after drying or curing.

To Metal or Wood

Epoxy or Hot Melt. Water based acrylic cement can also be tried. Clear drying is recommended.
Polished metals are more challenging than metals with some grain or texture.
To minimize excess glue showing, and to speed assembly, the surface can be prepared with an indention which acts as a bezel around the stone.
This can also provide better grip by the adhesive for applications that need it.

To certain Plastics
Acrylic based clear cement or craft glue

To Glass
Hot Melt or silicone

To Leather
Glue application to leather is not highly recommended. Depending on what type of leather it is, you probably need to prepare the surface first. Most leathers contain oils and have a polished smooth surface. This effectively gives the glue nothing to adhere to. You can consider sanding down the leather, or making small etchings in it so the glue physically, has some place to go. Stones simply glued to unprepared leather surfaces are generally easy to take off. This is what the Rhinestone Guy says about gluing to leather. We respect his opinion:
"You can use Gem Tac glue with leather, it holds ok, but does not penetrate the leather. You may loose a few stones every once in a while, but by and large, the glue holds them well. BUT NOT with belts and (pet) collars!"

Fabri-Tac Permanent Adhesive Glue, is another product that claims to be suitable for leather.

Tip:
The amount of glue you use is an important factor in the appearance and performance of your work.
Do some tests first to determine the right amount of glue to use, and to become competent at laying it down. Consider whether dispensing the glue from its bottle is reliable enough or if you should consider other techniques.

When you place the stone down on the glue, a small amount of glue should ooze out around the edge of the stone. This ensures you are binding the stone by it's edge and not simply relying on the foil backing to hold it. Otherwise you run the risk of having the foil backing separate from the stone if there is movement.

Will not fit into a 13x18mm pendant tray

UPDATED - I just received communication from the Seller that the less-than-perfect red cabochon is being replaced with one that is made by the same supplier as the blue one so they should now be perfect. I'm buying new ones for my jewelry and I will continue to use the less perfect ones for costumes. This seller is very responsive and responsible and I'm very happy with our communication. It's nice to be treated with respect by a vendor.[NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE RED CABOCHONS ONLY - I PURCHASED THE SAPPHIRE BLUE ONES FROM THIS SAME LISTING AND THEY FIT PERFECTLY! THE BLUE ONES ARE A DEFINITE FIVE STARS.]I'm writing this review (about the red cabochons) because reading the reviews gave me the impression that these would be very nice for my project. What I didn't take into account was that all the uses in the review photos are projects wherein there is no border around the cab. My mistake But I didn't want anyone else to make the same mistake.I checked with my digital caliber and these are literally 13mm x 18mm in size. This is exactly right as far as the listing description goes but it also means they won't fit into a 13x18mm setting. I have 5 different settings (small pendant bezels/charms) and they won't fit into any of them. They are very slightly larger than every other 13x18 cabochon in my stock. This means that normally, when I purchase a 13x18mm cabochon, it's not quite 13x18. My caliper shows most of them to be in the 12.82 x 17.85mm range. These all sung perfectly into a 13x18 base setting. These also have a little nub of plastic at one end of each cab that sticks out. None of my other cabs have a nub of plastic. Of course, the glass ones don't but I also have 3 acrylic ones, none of which have this little nub. I have filed off the little nub to see if they might fit into the setting without it but that doesn't resolve the issue. So, basically, if you are buying these (the red ones) to put in a 13x18mm pendant tray with a raised border/edge, they won't work. I'm sure there are other uses and these are about as good as acrylic cabs get otherwise ... if you don't count the plastic nub.The nub is unusual and doesn't show in the listing photos, even when I zoom in closely. None of my other acrylic cabs have a nub. Of course, when you file off the nub, there is a white spot. This would be covered by the edge of the pendant tray except that they won't fit into a pendant tray. My feeling about the nub is that all acrylics probably have this little nub when removed from the mold but that it is polished away with the proper equipment before sending it to customers. I don't have the correct polishing equipment so the nub represents a pretty significant flaw for me.

open package. gems missing

I've bought things from AllstarCo many times on their other venues and never had an issue, but my order of these stones arrived with the inner package corner cut open and stones were missing from the total. The outer packaging was sealed properly and the missing stones were not in the bag. The stones themselves are the usual Allstar quality.(updating to 4 star because the seller reached out to correct the issue)
